Our newest hires: Kenny (the human), Kawhi, & Cleo. Read about Kenny and the rest of the SM family in Our Team’s bios, and see why Kenny’s a social superstar on our brand new TikTok. Sustainatok?!

(National) niche marketing

We’ve reached some pretty targeted audiences this year. Our own industry’s bible, The NonProfit Times, featured SM’s grassroots story, which was pretty cool for a fledgling org like us. Meanwhile, the waste management industry’s go-to mag, Waste Advantage, went big with Making Trash Bloom. Be good, kids; you never know where you’ll read about yourself!

Is it April already? 2023 so far has buzzed by in a swarm of new hires, new partnerships, and new programs.

Some highlights:

  • The Virginia Recycling Association’s Board of Directors toured our Making Trash Bloom site at the Shenandoah County Landfill. Virginia recycling and landfill leaders wanted to see the project, with a view to scaling it up statewide. Read all about their visit in the Northern Virginia Daily, listen on NPR, or wait to see the video produced that day by American University’s film department.

  • Our earliest adopter in NoVA, the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, is very excited about our next big thing, EcologiGALs, a program geared at launching teen girls into environmental careers. In the last few months, our blueprint for EcologiGALs has scaled up significantly, thanks to a new partnership with Fairfax County’s Dept. of Neighborhood & Community Services (NCS). NCS serves at-risk youth and families throughout Virginia’s largest county, meaning we can too. Stay tuned!

  • We caught up with our old friend Janet Michael on the River 95.3’s Valley Today, to talk our new Rebranding Recycling project, supported by Virginia’s Department of Environmental Quality and by the PATH Foundation. Over the next few months, keep an eye out for #RebrandingRecycling content on our social media (and on the accounts of our project partners, Mountain Vista Governor’s School and the City of Winchester), in radio PSAs, at community festivals, and in all kinds of unexpected places.

  • The Winchester Star covered the preview event for our city center pollinator meadow. Get all the deets on this potential municipal gamechanger; we need your help to make it happen!
