Making Trash Bloom Plant Count

Sustainability Matters Volunteer Opportunity

Be a community scientist and learn more about our Making Trash Bloom meadows. Join our native meadow plant count team on Saturday, August 16 at 9 am. We’ll meet at our meadows at the Rappahannock Landfill, where you’ll help us identify what’s growing in the pilot plots. You’ll be able to spend time outside, meet like-minded folks, and collect valuable data that will help us spread Making Trash Bloom to additional landfills!

We are seeking volunteers to help collect data on the success of our native plantings at landfills:

  • Learn to identify native and non-native meadow plants

  • Learn to use the iNaturalist app to help with plant identification

  • Learn to use a quadrat for ecological sampling

  • Enjoy time outside at the prettiest landfill sites in our region (no, really!)

We will start with a brief training session - no prior experience necessary. Ability to walk and bend on hilly terrain is a must. Wear long pants, sturdy shoes, and a sun hat. Use of a smartphone with the free iNaturalist app is required.

All Plant Counts:
Rappahannock Landfill July 12 and August 16 9am-12pm
Shenandoah County Landfill July 26 and August August 23 9am-12pm

Note: When you register for this program, we'll also sign you up for Sustainability Matters' email list. We never sell your info, and you may unsubscribe at any time.
