This fall, we’re delighted to welcome our first two interns from the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation (as well as about a dozen of their classmates, who’ve also been volunteering for us!). Based at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, VA, Sydney and Cassidy are helping with a wide variety of Sustainability Matters programs, as well as pursuing independent research initiatives and tag-teaming on a project to increase their own generation’s conservation engagement. Sydney Grimes is a sophomore at Mason, headed for an accelerated Master’s in Environmental Policy by 2024. She’s already taken deep dives into conservation’s tricky tradeoffs, having researched hydroelectricity’s impact on wildlife. For us, she’s exploring the complexities of utility-scale solar. Since moving to DC from Pittsburgh, Sydney has become obsessed by cherry blossom culture (despite the tree’s non-native nature!), and even gotten cherry blossom tattoos.
